JetBlue is making a significant change to its basic economy fare policy. Starting September 6, passengers with Blue Basic tickets will be allowed to bring a carry-on bag in addition to their personal item, provided space is available in the overhead bins. This move comes as a welcome update for travelers who previously had to pay extra for a higher-tier ticket or opt for an upgraded seat if they wanted to stow a carry-on.
Under the new policy, the inclusion of a carry-on bag will be available to all customers holding Blue Basic tickets, regardless of when they booked their flight. This marks a notable shift from the airline’s previous practice of restricting carry-on luggage for passengers on its most affordable fare class.
The change places JetBlue ahead of its competitors, with United Airlines now standing out as one of the last major U.S. carriers that does not permit a carry-on for basic economy customers. While other airlines continue to allow personal items like a purse, backpack, or laptop bag on basic economy tickets, JetBlue is extending its allowance to include a full carry-on, which could be a game-changer for many frequent flyers.
However, despite the added flexibility, JetBlue acknowledges that some customers may still need to gate-check their carry-on bags if overhead bin space runs out. This is a common practice for airlines with busy flights, but it is expected that the new policy will provide more options for those booking on a budget.
As of March 2025, passengers booking JetBlue’s Blue Basic fares can look forward to more convenience on their travels, making this move a significant enhancement to the airline’s overall service offering.
